Removal of the ferrule guide sleeves from the female SMPTE 304 connector is often required for certain kinds of maintenance, such as cleaning the ferrules with AFC-3000 cleaning gun.

This specialized tool screws down on each guide tube. Once the tool is fully screwed on, the tool is pulled away from the connector, thereby removing the tube. Both ends of the tool perform the same function, thereby allowing both tubes to be removed and safely stored on the tool. Once maintenance is complete, the tube is inserted in its receptacle while still mounted on the tool. A firm push with the tool snaps the tube into the connector, after which the tool is unscrewed from the tube.

This tool will also work with variations on the basic SMPTE 304 design (e.g. CANARE). In this case screwing the tool onto one of the sleeves and pulling will simultaneously remove both tubes and the housing assembly, thereby simplifying the process.
